Botox Q & A
What is Botox?
Botox is a well-known neuromodulator that reduces the appearance of expression lines. As an injectable treatment, Botox is fast and minimally invasive. Results appear within days to weeks of treatment and last for several months.
Botox is also temporary, so you can maintain your results with regular treatments or let the medication wear off gradually.
How does Botox work?
Botox temporarily paralyzes the muscle that gets the injection from Dr. Durchhalter. Botox works by interfering with the nerves that control the muscle. When the muscle can’t contract, the skin on top of it relaxes.
Not only does this relaxation effectively treat existing wrinkles, it can also prevent new lines from forming in the treatment area.
What types of wrinkles does Botox treat?
All neuromodulators, including Botox, treat dynamic wrinkles. Unlike static wrinkles — which Dr. Durchhalter treats with dermal fillers — dynamic wrinkles form from repetitive muscle movement, rather than volume loss.
Common wrinkles that Botox treats include:
- Glabellar lines (frown lines)
- Crow’s feet
- Forehead wrinkles
- Bunny lines (top of the nose)
- Marionette lines (around the mouth)
Botox can also create a lifting effect at the top of the brow.
Injecting it into the masseter muscles in the jaw is a common treatment for temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) and jaw clenching, which can enlarge the muscles around the jaw. Botox injections can create a slimming effect.
What can I expect from Botox?
When you arrive for your appointment, Dr. Durchhalter applies a numbing anesthetic and injects the treatment into the predetermined areas. The entire treatment takes only a few minutes.
Afterward, you may experience mild swelling, tenderness, and inflammation at the injection site. These are normal side effects that should subside within a few hours.
How long do Botox results last?
It takes about 1-2 weeks to see full results from Botox. After about 3-4 months, the results gradually fade. Routine follow-ups can extend your results. Botox is also safe enough to combine with other treatments, such as dermal fillers.
Do I have other options besides Botox?
While Botox is the gold standard of neuromodulators, Dr. Durchhalter also offers Dysport®, Xeomin®, and Jeuveau®. She often recommends these neuromodulators to patients who have used Botox, but are no longer achieving the same results they once did.
