How to Manage Psoriasis Flare-Ups in Spring

The flowers are blooming, the temps are rising, and the days are lengthening — unfortunately, your skin isn’t as thrilled as you are.
For those with psoriasis, spring brings allergens, triggers, and flare-ups. The good news? With a few proactive steps, you can manage psoriasis flare-ups and actually enjoy spring.
Our dermatology specialists at Allure Dermatology are here with simple, effective strategies for managing your psoriasis this season.
Spring and your skin
Spring weather can introduce a mix of factors that aggravate psoriasis symptoms. Common triggers include:
- Pollen allergies
- Temperature changes
- Increased sun exposure
- Outdoor activities
- Sweating
- Exposure to environmental triggers
Knowing what’s behind your flare-ups is the first step to keeping them in check.
Let’s get your flare-ups under control
Managing your psoriasis often comes down to preparation and consistency. Here’s how you can reduce your risk of flare-ups this season.
Moisturize regularly
As temperatures rise, your skin can dry out quickly, especially if you spend more time outside. Keeping your skin hydrated reduces flakiness, redness, and irritation.
We recommend using a thick, fragrance-free moisturizer twice daily. You should apply it liberally to the most commonly affected areas, like your elbows, knees, and scalp. Apply the moisturizer after showering to lock in hydration.

Protect your skin from the sun
Your skin has a love-hate relationship with the sun. While controlled sun exposure can improve psoriasis symptoms for some, overdoing it can trigger a flare-up.
We recommend limiting sun exposure to 5-10 minutes a few times a week to see the benefits. Always use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to prevent sunburn and irritation.
Wearing lightweight, breathable clothing that covers vulnerable areas can also go a long way.
Manage seasonal allergies
Spring allergies can increase inflammation, making your psoriasis symptoms worse. We recommend antihistamines and allergy medications, showering and/or changing your clothes after spending time outdoors, and using a HEPA air filter for your home.
Avoid common irritants
With spring cleaning and outdoor fun comes potential exposure to irritants. Be sure you opt for fragrance-free detergents, soaps, and cleaning products. Always wear gloves when cleaning or gardening, and consider wearing natural fiber that is breathable and gentler on psoriasis-prone skin.
Stay cool and comfortable
Sweat is a common trigger for psoriasis. Make sure your clothes are moisture-wicking, and shower promptly after exercising. Many of our patients also use cooling towels and fans to stay cool and reduce the effects of sweating.
Manage stress levels
Your spring calendar can fill up quickly and trigger more stress — a known psoriasis trigger. Don’t forget your relaxation techniques, and ensure you get plenty of sleep to let your mind and body recover.
Stick to your treatment plan
Even if your psoriasis improves in the spring, continuing your prescribed treatment is essential. Skipping medications or treatments can lead to sudden flare-ups.
Springtime doesn’t have to mean endless psoriasis flare-ups. With the right skin care routine, smart lifestyle adjustments, and guidance from your Allure Dermatology expert, you can keep your skin calm and comfortable all season long.
