Dermal Fillers Aftercare: Tips to Avoid Swelling and Migration
Smooth skin, plump features, and the perfect pout — this is life after fillers when you adhere to aftercare protocol. Results from fillers develop instantly and last anywhere from 6-12 months, and (at least upfront) they require your buy-in.
But don’t panic. Taking care of your skin and maintaining your fillers doesn’t take too much extra work.
In this blog, our Allure Dermatology team walks you through the best strategies for managing swelling and preventing filler migration.
Get to know fillers
We use fillers to restore sunken features, plump out thinning lips, and even smooth out fine lines. These frustrating aesthetic issues occur when your body gradually reduces its collagen and elastin production, two skin proteins responsible for supporting your skin’s structure and giving it volume.
We offer the industry’s best, most advanced fillers: Juvéderm®, Restylane®, and RHA® fillers by Revance®. Our patients love these fillers because they offer the longest-lasting results and virtually zero risk of side effects.
However, it’s important to equip yourself against two of the most common post-injection problems: swelling and migration. Let’s take a closer look.
Swelling following fillers
Even when you get your fillers from a professional, swelling can occur. The delicate areas of your face, like your lips and under your eyes, are especially susceptible to welling. You may notice swelling for a few days or a couple of weeks, but there are some things you can do to shorten your recovery time and significantly reduce swelling. We recommend:
- Keeping your head elevated for the first 24 hours
- Gently apply a cold compress to the injection site
- Staying hydrated
- Limiting sodium
- Avoiding strenuous exercise
You may even need to avoid wearing a hat, especially if you have fillers in your forehead, to prevent your eyelids from swelling.
All about filler migration
The gel-like substance we inject into your skin has an unfortunate habit of migrating from its intended spot. Migration occurs most often in and around the lips and can create the appearance of a “lip filler mustache.”
Our experts take great care to use proper techniques and not overfill your features during your injections; however, the most common cause of migration is natural facial movements shifting the filler over time.
The best way to avoid filler migration after your injection is to reduce friction in and around the injection site as much as possible. This means no touching or rubbing, drinking from a straw, or sleeping on your back. You should also avoid:
- Chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and other facial treatments for at least 14 days
- Excessive heat exposure
- Strenuous exercise
Your face moves so much throughout the day, posing a threat to your fillers; it doesn’t need any extra help from your habits. If your fillers do migrate (or if you got fillers from someone else and they botched it), come see us to fix it. There are a few ways to dissolve the filler and/or manipulate it to even out your features.
